From the time Stephen was in second grade, right through his college years, he was heavily involved with the activities happening at the First Baptist Church of Henderson, Tennessee. It was there that Stephen made his friendships that would last forever. Every March, the youth group would take a trip to Nashville for the annual Tennessee Youth Evangelism Conference, and nearly every summer, the group would make a trek to a beach somewhere. For the most part, Keith Brown, FBC's youth minister, fostered unity in the group by taking youth trips that were for only the FBC youth group individually, instead of attending national conferences. By the time, Stephen was a freshman in high school, he was already serving in a leadership role by being elected to the Youth Council. He, and his friend Phillip, would ultimately take over certain elements of the youth worship experience after a not-so-intelligent youth minister was brought in.
Stephen
treasured the time in the FBC youth group. The trips in the big
green bus, while not the most pleasant of riding atmospheres, hold a
special place in his heart. |
