Like so many other important
figures found in the annals of history, Stephen holds an intense
value for his family relationships. Even though Stephen grew up
without certain normal familial figures, he has often said that he
would not have had it any other way. "I firmly believe that I
am a better person because of the environment I grew up in,"
Stephen told Barbara Walters. "I think my creativity stems from
my lack of siblings. I was forced to entertain myself."
In the absence of brothers and sisters, Stephen
substituted those relationships with his two first cousins, Josh and
Julie Williams. During the summers of Stephen's youth, Josh and
Julie were regular staples at the house of Stephen's grandmother, or
as the grandchildren refer to her, Nana.
Stephen's mother, Vicki Phillips, and Nana still live in the little
town of Henderson, Tennessee, where Stephen can still be seen every
now and then. His deep duty to his family drives him back for visits
several times a year.
